India's Border Security Force (BSF) said on Friday that security has been stepped up along its international border with Bangladesh due to the political uncertainty prevailing in the neighbouring country.

"We have asked our soldiers to keep a close watch on the border situation. Our men remained vigilant round-the-clock along the borders, specially where a substantial number of people reside across the border," BSF spokesman Bhaskar Rawat told media here.

"After the assembly elections in the five Indian states are over, the border guards deployed on poll duties would be re-deployed along the borders to further reinforce vigilance along the sensitive borders," he added.

India shares a 4,000-km border with Bangladesh in the east and the northeast.

Bangladesh has been in political turmoil with the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance engaged into a violent agitation, demanding postponement of the general elections.
