Infrastructure conclave in Guwahati highlights investment potentiality of Northeast

The northeast region offers immense investment opportunities in different sectors. In order to address the issues of investment for infrastructure development in the region, an infrastructure conclave was recently held in Guwahati that was attended by various state representatives and industrialists.

Decline in insurgency related incidents has given a fillip to infrastructure development in the Northeast region.

Many companies are now eyeing the potential in the region and have shown keenness to engage in various infrastructural development projects.

Recently, top industry heads, government officials and Chief Ministers of various Northeastern states assembled in Guwahati to discuss the prospects of bringing in domestic and overseas investment for infrastructure development in the region.

Organized by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the event titled "Northeast region Infrastructure Conclave 2014-Unlocking Investment Potential in NER infrastructure Development" focused on the challenges to development of infrastructure in the region.

"This is the first time that we have ventured into the northeast and after this we intend to open our office here and try and create opportunities with various governments here and feed the information back to our membership which is about 48,000 people. And hopefully between information feeding and the opportunities, business will come up and infrastructure in the area will improve," said Alok B Shriram, Senior Vice President, PHDCCI.

The conference touched upon ways to attract private investors for infrastructure development, opportunities in transport, power, telecom, cold chain development and many other sectors.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and his Assam and Mizoram counterparts asked investors to explore business opportunities in various sectors like education, renewable energy and human resource development.

"Meghalaya has a huge potentiality for investment which will create opportunities and besides opportunities for our own people, it will have its positive impact in connecting the Northeast with the rest of the country and the rest of the world. It is crucial to enable this part of the country to pro-actively and productively participate in the growth process of this great nation," said Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

"This conclave that we are doing, the purpose of this is to showcase what we have in the other parts of the country and also to understand the whole area of Northeast, the culture of Northeast and integrate better," said Himanshu Agarwal, an industrialist from Gujarat.

Rich in natural resources, the Northeastern states have faced negligence due to prolonged insurgency.

Now, the people of the region want a drastic economic development.

The government has also been giving a lot of emphasis on bringing about development in various infrastructures related sectors in the Northeast.
