South African fast bowler Dale Steyn has become a doubt for the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy against India in Cardiff on Thursday, because of a side strain.

Steyn felt discomfort in the Proteas' warm-up match against Pakistan and bowled only five overs, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

According to South Africa team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee, after complaining of some discomfort during the warm-up match against Pakistan on Monday, Steyn was taken for an MRI scan, due to the sensitive nature of the affected area, which revealed mild swelling in a left intercostal muscle.

Moosajee further said that although Steyn will be assessed and treated intensively on a daily basis, it still cannot be determined whether he will be available for the first match against India in Cardiff or not.

However, Moosajee said that there was more encouraging news for all-rounder Robin Peterson, who was hit on the left foot in the same match and had experienced some swelling, adding that Peterson had responded well to treatment overnight.

Cricket South Africa also announced that Quinton de Kock, who is not in the 15-man squad, will travel with the side during the Champions Trophy as potential back-up for wicket-keeper AB de Villiers, the report added.
