England all-rounder Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the rest of the ongoing five-match ODI series against Australia due to a chronic knee injury.

The 29-year-old sustained the injury in his right quad during his side's 38-run win over Pakistan in the second ODI at the Sophia Gardens in Leeds.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently confirmed that "the injury was caused in part by a flare-up of a chronic right knee problem."

Though England could not specify the date of his return, Woakes would miss the remaining matches against Australia and the subsequent T20I series against India.

"He has had an injection for the knee issue last Monday and will now undertake rehabilitation and conditioning programme to address both injuries. A date for return cannot be specified at this stage, but he will not be available before the India Royal London ODI series," the ECB said.

The all-rounder, who has been managing knee problems since undergoing a surgery in 2015, was earlier forced to miss the Champions Trophy in 2017 after suffering a side strain during the opening moments of the match against Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Ben Stokes will also not take any part in the remainder of the ongoing series against Australia as he is "progressing well" after sustaining a hamstring injury in the build-up to the second Test against Pakistan at Emerald Headingley.

However, the ECB said that Stokes would continue his rehabilitation programme during the fourth and fifth ODIs and is expected to make a return in T20I series against India next month.

"He can bat fully and is now able to run at 90 percent capacity. He will commence his return to bowling programme this week. The plan is for Ben to continue his rehabilitation programme with the England squad during the 4th and 5th ODIs at Emirates Riverside and Emirates Old Trafford. He is expected to be involved in the preparation, with a view to being available to play in the IT20s against India starting next month," Stokes said.

England are slated to play the fourth match against Australia at the Trent Bridge from Tuesday.
