Iranian navy has sent warships to the Atlantic Ocean in a historic first for the Islamic Republic, state-run media reported.

Iranian navy sent in the Sabalan destroyer and the Khark logistic helicopter carrier on a mission that will span over a three months period, the Washington Times reports.

According to the report, there were nearly 30 navy academy cadets aboard the ships for taking part in training exercises as part of the overall military mission.

Iran is trying to bolster its image of a strong naval power as promised in 2012, the report added.
