The United States has reportedly said that it is unlikely to launch a rescue operation to evacuate the Iraqis trapped by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants on Mount Sinjar.
The Pentagon said in a statement that security forces hads observed that fewer Iraqis were trapped on Mount Sinjar than expected and they were also in a better condition than feared. Therefore, it has decided to put the evacuation mission on hold, reported the BBC.
However, the Pentagon statement added that the US will continue to provide humanitarian assistance.
Terming the Iraq crisis a "level three emergency," the United Nations had earlier stated that thousands of Iraqis, comprising religious minorities like, the Yazidi sect, were trapped on the mountain after being forced to flee their homes.
