Iraqi Kurds have said in a message to the Obama administration that they would require heavy weapons to defeat the Islamic State (IS) militants group.

According to the Washington Times, Kurdish fighters also said that they would need helicopters, tanks, artillery and an assortment of heavy weapons to defeat the extremist group.

Fuad Hussein, chief adviser to the president of the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq said that they could not fight with the weapons they had and that they need "different kinds of weapons".

The Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said that they understood that Iraqi Kurds require more weapons.

U.S. officials said that giving too much firepower to the Kurds may prompt them to seek independence from Iraq.
