Iraqi officials have said that Islamic State militants have been driven out from the oil refinery town Bajji, near the capital Baghdad.

Gen Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi said that the town of Bajji has been 'completely liberated'.

According to the BBC, there are still reports of heavy fighting around the country's largest oil refinery.

IS militants had seized Baiji in June during a lighting advance and laid siege to the refinery through northern Iraq.

The extremist group has taken over large swathes of Iraq and Syria and is being targeted by US-led military campaign since August.
