Israel has announced that it will be withdrawing all of its military troops to defensive positions outside the Gaza Strip.

According to the BCC, Lt-Col Peter Lerner told reporters Israeli forces would have left Gaza before a 72-hour truce, scheduled for 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT).

Reports by Israeli media suggest that Israel has achieved its main aim of the conflict, which was to destroy militants' tunnels connecting to Israel.

The announcement was made moments after the Israeli military and Hamas confirmed a 72-hour humanitarian truce.

Col Lerner said the Israel Defence Forces will be redeployed in defensive positions outside the Gaza Strip and will maintain those defensive positions.

The military operation in Gaza was launched on July 8 that included hundreds of air strikes across the Gaza strip.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel's main goal was to "return quiet and security to its citizens.
