FIFA officials have revealed that Italy's Nicola Rizzoli would referee the 2014 World Cup finale between Germany and Argentina on Sunday.

Many had reportedly expected FIFA to appoint an Asian referee for Sunday's game, as a European and South American team would be playing. However, the chairperson of the FIFA's refereeing committee Jim Boyce said that Rizzoli would get the duty.

Boyce said that FIFA chooses the best referees for the best matches, and the Italian would referee the final, Sport24 reported.

An official announcement on the World Cup final is yet to be made by FIFA, but head of refereeing for FIFA Massimo Busacca confirmed that Rizzoli would be in charge of the match.

Rizzoli has already worked three matches at this year's World Cup, including two played by Argentina, which saw them defeat Belgium in the quarterfinal and a group win over Nigeria.

Rizzoli also handled the high-profile match between the Netherlands and Spain on the second day of the tournament and was also the referee for the all-German Champions League final in 2013, when Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in London, the report added.
