Jadavpur University students have sought the resignation of the Vice Chancellor after 23 students were arrested while protesting outside the university campus, demanding a fresh probe in the alleged molestation case that took place on August 28.
Giving an account of yesterday's incident, a student Ritika Dasgupta told ANI, "We are a bunch of students and we were playing music, we were playing our instruments all of a sudden around 2.30 am in the night the lights went off, people in civil clothes and also the police started entering the campus and targeted the women in the very beginning."
"The people in civil clothes they actually molested us and there were no lights. When the guys tried to save us they dragged them away and 23 of them are arrested, around 36 of them are admitted to the nearby hospital," she added.
"All we wanted is an impartial investigation and we wanted to meet the VC personally and tell us what he wants, but that was not the case."
Dasgupta added after the incident the students went to the Jadavpur police station and blocked the Jadavpur crossing but they were told by the police that if they didn't get up from there they would send the Rapid Action Force (RAF).
"We are getting threats. People think we are at fault. We are not at fault. We just want justice. We have decided that we want a resignation from the VC and the entire panel until and unless he comes and talks to us in person we are going to carry forward with this agitation," she further added.
Last month, during a festival organised by the college, as many as ten male students had allegedly dragged a female student of the University into the boys' hostel and molested her.
The alleged victim informed the college authorities and filed a police complaint, following which officials began an investigation. However, no arrests have been made so far.
