The Cassava plant is a nutrient-rich root-vegetable. Known for having starch on the roots called Tapioca Starch, this is a staple crop in tropical and subtropical regions and extensively cultivated as an annual crop in South East Asia.

It is a major source of carbohydrate and source material of MSG, a food flavouring with an umami taste known as "ajinomoto".

A global foods company, Ajinomoto Group produces "ajinomoto", an umami seasoning and offers great varieties of seasonings and processed food products in 130 countries and regions worldwide.

The Ajinomoto Group has been embracing recycle system in its production activities, best represented by bio-cycles involving both raw materials and energy in which all raw materials are used up, by-product is turned into value-added "co-product" to give back to nature or used as an energy source.

In Vietnam, two bio-cycle systems ensure sustainable production.

One is the energy bio-cycle in which rice husks are utilized to generate energy. Another is the raw material bio-cycle where raw materials for umami seasoning "aji-no-moto" such as sugar canes and cassava are completely utilized in the production process, and the co-product "ami-ami" is returned to the fields as fertilizer.

"We generate co-product as fertilizer, and this fertilizer we will apply back to the farm for getting higher productivity of sugar cane or cassava, and then the starch and cane molasses will come back to the factory for the production. These Bio-Cycles make farmers happier and we contribute to the sustainability of Vietnam," said Hoang Van Quoc Chuong, Manager, Ajinomoto Bien Hoa Factory.

'Ami-ami' is a fertilizer sprayed to the farm field where it cultivates sugarcane and cassava in Vietnam.

Demonstrated by such effective use of resources, Ajinomoto Vietnam reduces environmental burden to realise sustainable production activity.

"After using 'ami-ami' for cassava plantation, I realized that it improves soil character, because it has high nutrition and organic matter. Applying 'ami-ami' fertilizer with Phosphorus and Potassium, cassava will produce more bulbs with bigger bulbs and higher powders content. We can also save about 30-40 percent of the cost of fertilizer investment," said a farmer, Dang Van Tho.

Based on the thinking of "Supply back", Ajinomoto Vietnam is contributing to reduce carbon and support farmers through returning nutritive "ami-ami" to farmers.

The Ajinomoto group as well as Ajinomoto Vietnam is committed to maintain the sustainable production with local community, working to preserve and improve the natural environment in each country.
