Soon after hearing a Bangalore special court's verdict in connection with a disproportionate assets case, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AADMK) leader J.Jayalalithaa reportedly complained of dizziness, and had to be rushed to a hospital.
Jayalalithaa was sentenced to serve four years in jail and asked to pay a fine Rs.100 crores in connection with a disproportionate assets case by a Bangalore Special Court on Saturday.
The court's verdict came hours after Jayalalithaa was convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The verdict means that Jayalalithaa stands disqualified as an MLA of the Tamil Nadu State Assembly, and therefore, she will have to step down as chief minister.
Earlier in the day, AIADMK supporters picketed and protested outside the court premises, at the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border and outside the residence of DMK leader M.Karunanidhi.
Police had to resort to a baton charge to disperse the gathering and bring a sense of order to the area.
The AIADMK chief has been convicted for obtaining assets worth almost Rs 66 crores through dishonest means during her first tenure as chief minister between 1991 and 1996. Jayalalithaa's former friend V K Sasikala, V N Sudhakaran and J Illavarasi are the three co-accused in the case.
