Amid reports that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will be elevated as the party chief, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh on Thursday said dynasty rule is sacrilege of democracy.
Singh told ANI though Rahul's elevation is Congress' internal matter, but the whole concept of dynasty is anti-democracy.
"Rahul Gandhi is not at all a difficult competition for Narendra Modi. Strictly speaking, we should not be talking much about it because it is an internal matter of the Congress Party. But having said that since all of us live in a democracy and the wider question which requires serious thought is does this auger well for a democracy to promote a dynasty," said Singh.
"The entire concept of democracy is born out of the will and inspiration to get rid of dynasty rule. And if we are promoting dynasty rule in a democracy, it would not only amount to disservice and sacrilege of democracy it would also amount to disregard of people's prerogative to exercise their free will and free mandate," he added.
The Congress Welfare Committee (CWC) is expected to meet this month and take a final call on Rahul officially taking over as the party chief.
With Rahul being elevated as the Congress president, AICC reshuffle has also been predicted on the cards.
However, difference in opinion in this regard seems to exist within the party with some veterans voicing against Rahul's style of functioning.
