The high-level inquiry committee of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Thursday upheld Umar Khalid's rustication and a fine of Rs 10,000 imposed on Kanhaiya Kumar for raising anti-national slogans raised inside college premises in February 2016.

The JNU panel had in 2016 recommended rustication of Khalid and two other students, and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Kumar, the then students' union president, in connection with the campus event against Afzal Guru's hanging, which allegedly saw anti-national slogans being raised.

The five-member panel had also imposed a financial penalty on 13 other students for violation of disciplinary norms.

Later, the students later moved to Delhi High Court to seek directions against the decision of the Appellate Authority of JNU with regards to the rustication and fines imposed on Khalid and Kumar.
