A Delhi Court on Friday sent JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar to three-day police custody.

The development came as the police produced him in the Patiala House Court here after his arrest.

Kumar was arrested following the controversy over anti-India slogans being raised at an event in the varsity against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Kumar earlier alleged that the entire episode was just 'an excuse' as he defeated the ABVP candidate in the union elections.

"This is an excuse, I defeated the ABVP in Students Union elections, that is why it is happening," he said.

The Delhi Police had earlier registered an FIR against some unknown persons on a complaint filed by the Press Club management against the event organizers.

The complaint in this regard was filed at the Parliament Street Police Station.

The Delhi Police had earlier registered a case of sedition against the JNU students, who had agitated against Guru's hanging following complaints by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Maheish Girri and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members.
