The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Thursday urged students protesting over missing student Najeeb Ahmad to immediately end their agitation and allow the institution to function normally.
Expressing concern that certain outside elements and miscreants are trying to politicise and communalize the issue and create a law and order problem, the university in a letter urged the students "to stop the illegal and unlawful agitation and go back to your respective classes and hostels."
"The JNU administration officials, including the vice chancellor, have been under wrongful and unlawful confinement by the student agitators since the evening of 19 October 2016. Some officials with serious health problems had to spend the night without food and medicine. Even the family members of some officials, who came to meet them late at night, were not allowed to meet them," the letter said.
"We appeal to the students to end their agitation with immediate effect and go back to their classes. They should allow the university to function normally. All necessary steps as per the rules have been initiated by the administration to trace Najeeb Ahmed who has gone missing for last several days," it stated.
The varsity further said they are in regular touch with the police in this regard.
"Our efforts will continue to find him and help him resume his academic activities without any fear. We had several meetings with the student leaders to end the agitation," the university said.

Earlier, Vice Chancellor of the university M Jagdeesh Kumar, while briefing the media expressed hope that missing student of the university will come back soon .
The vice chancellor and other senior officials were locked yesterday after a large number of students gathered at the administrative block in the afternoon to protest. After sloganeering and demonstration, the students blocked the gates of the building.
A student of the School of Biotechnology, Najeeb Ahmed, allegedly went missing on Saturday following a brawl on the campus the night before.
Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju earlier today briefed Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the issue of the missing Ahmad. Rajnath also spoke to Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma over the incident. The Delhi Police has announced a cash reward of 50 thousand rupees on any information on the missing student.
