Montu Borah, a 39-year-old resident of Kathonibari Gaon in Jorhat, has set an example for the youth of the region, by successfully running a fish farming business for the past fifteen years.

Montu discontinued his studies and started cultivating Rabi crops.

With the little money he had, he then started a small fish farm in 1998. Today, he produces around 5000-6000 kilograms of fish annually and is planning to expand his fishery business.

He earns around Rs.2.5-3 lakhs per annum. He is also keen to help villagers who want to take up fish farming.

Borah said: "Seeing my work, the people who worked with me gradually started their own cultivation. Others also developed an interest after seeing the ponds. Now, I have 15-20 boys working with me. I want them to progress so I gave them money to get fish seed and start their own business."

Besides his fish farming business, Montu has also taken up goat rearing, rice and vegetable cultivation.
