A court here on Saturday extended the police custody of former editor of Tehelka, Tarun Tejpal, by four days in connection with a sexual assault case against a fellow woman journalist, said his lawyer.
Tejpal was arrested on November 30.
"We opposed it. We said, 'the grounds on which they are seeking extension are not justifiable grounds and the court should peruse the case dairies and the material on record.' After perusal of the case dairies and after hearing our arguments, the court has granted them a police remand of only four days," said lawyer Sandeep Kapoor.
A young woman journalist has accused Tejpal of assaulting her twice in a hotel lift during a conference in Goa earlier in November.
Tejpal stepped down as Tehelka's Editor-in-Chief last week.
Tejpal was listed as one of Asia's 50 most powerful communicators in 2001 by Asiaweek, while the Guardian newspaper ranked him among the 20 who constitute India's new elite in 2007. Business Week rated him one of the 50 most powerful Indians.
