Congress Party leader P L Punia on Tuesday criticized Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung for appointing Joint Commissioner of Police Mahesh Meena as the new Delhi's Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) chief without consulting with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi Government, saying his actions are 'detrimental' to democracy.

Punia said the tussle between Jung and the AAP government is nothing but a fight for administrative supremacy.

"We welcome any efforts made to stop corruption, but what is happening in Delhi is a fight for supremacy. The opinion of the elected government should be taken into consideration, and then, the final decision should be taken by the Lieutenant Governor. But, if a one-sided decision is enforced, then it is detrimental to democracy. This kind of functioning by the LG should be stopped," Punia told ANI.

Meena was appointed as Delhi's Anti Corruption Branch chief by Jung on Monday.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has alleged that the appointment is in contempt of court, because the Delhi High Court had clarified that the ACB comes under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Government.
