A large number of people assembled at the historical Kamakhya Temple here to take part in the annual Ambumachi Fair.

The fair is regarded as the biggest religious festival of Hindus in the Northeast.

Devotees from across the country and foreigners visit Kamakhya every year.

Navakanta Sharma, one of the organisers of the fair, said: "Not only Assam, but the entire Northeast is a major attraction for tourists. There are many religious places and festivals held in different states, which can become major attractions not only in India, but the world over. If the government provides us help, it will be very beneficial."

The state government set up big tents for the devotees and security was tight.

A free bus service was also provided for visitors.

Various organisations are also helping out by setting up medical camps and distributing food.

"I have come here to pray, and hope that the goddess will bless everyone," said a devotee from Meghalaya.

Festivals, like this one, help in promoting a sense of unity by bringing together people from different places and walks of life.
