DMK chief M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the Dadri lynching case and attack on writers is sad and condemnable.

"The Centre can't be indifferent to threat to freedom of expression and pluralism. Indifference is injustice; would become a black era in history," Karunanidhi said in a statement.

Eminent writers across the country have returned their Akademi awards protesting what they called a "vicious assault" on "India's culture of diversity and debate" questioning the silence of the Prime Minister on "this reign of terror", including the lynching of a man in Dadri over rumours of beef consumption.
