Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow will helm an adaptation of 'The True American', starring Tom Hardy.
Anand Giridharadas wrote the nonfiction book, which is set in the days following the September 11 attacks, Deadline reported.
Self-styled "American terrorist" Mark Stroman murdered two immigrants in Texas, but a third man survived being shot in the head during the spree: Raisuddin Bhuiyan, a Bangladesh Air Force veteran, was working at a Dallas-area convenience store as he established himself in America.
It tells the true story of Bhuiyan, who had recently immigrated to the US and was working in a mini-mart when 9/11 happened.
In the days after the terror attacks, Stroman, going on what he considered a patriotic spree, shot Bhuiyan and workers at other gas stations. Two other victims died but Buiyan lived. Stroman, meanwhile, got the death penalty.
Ten years later, in an effort to find healing, Bhuiyan wrestled a series of obstacles in order to meet his shooter and publicly forgive him. He then fought the state and the governor to have Stroman's life spared.
Annapurna Pictures's Megan Ellison, who worked with Bigelow on Best Picture Oscar nominee 'Zero Dark Thirty', acquired rights to the book and will produce, with Matthew Budman exec producing.
