The Congress Party on Tuesday attacked both the Centre and Delhi Governments over the rise in prices of petroleum products despite the value of crude oil going down globally.
"Kejriwal is junior Modi and Modi is senior Kejriwal. The petroleum prices are globally falling and the Central Government has raised excise duty and Kejriwal government has increased the VAT on petroleum product. Both of them have a similar style of functioning," Congress leader Shakeel Ahmad told ANI.
Petrol price in the national capital was today hiked by 96 paise per litre and diesel by 53 paise after the state government raised VAT or local sales tax on the two fuels.
The Delhi government last night raised VAT on petrol to 27 percent from 25 percent, resulting in 96 paise a litre hike in retail pump rates.
Similarly, the VAT on diesel was increased from 16.6 percent to 18 percent. A pollution cess of Rs 0.25 per litre has also been levied on diesel.
The Centre had hiked excise duty on petrol by Rs. 0.37 per litre and on diesel by Rs 2 per litre, the second increase in just over two weeks.
