The Kerala Government has refused to renew the licences of more than 400 bars.

About 418 bars have remained closed since April 1 after their licences expired on March 31.

State Excise Minister K. Babu said these bars had not been granted license renewal, as they did not meet required standards as per the directions of Supreme Court and the recommendations of the Justice Ramachandran Committee, which studies the issues of bars in the state.

"Regarding this 418 bar hotels, the government pointed out that these bars were not maintaining the standards," said Babu.

Meanwhile, opposition parties in Kerala are against the state government's excise policy.

However, many social and religious organisations welcomed the government's decision.

The opposition has accused the ruling government of being involved in corruption in bar license renewal issue.
