The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Saturday said Haryana Chief Minister M.L. Khattar has no right to remain in his post after making his controversial beef remark and urged President Pranab Mukherjee to intervene.

CPI National Secretary D Raja said Khattar should step down and become a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) 'pracharak'.

"Look at the way the Haryana chief minister has spoken about Muslims eating beef and their stay in India. He cannot remain the chief minister of the state after making such an atrocious statement against Muslim community," Raja told ANI.

"By this time, he should have resigned and become a 'pracharak' of the RSS. A chief minister has made such a statement and the prime minister and governor are silent. Now, the President must ask the government what is happening," he added.

Khattar had in an interview to the Indian Express said that 'If Muslims want to continue living in India, they must give up consuming beef', after which he drew ire of politicians.

His clarification fell on deaf ears.
