Confirming the end of a security operation against three Pakistan-based militants, a senior police officer said on Thursday that all three militants had been killed.
"Finally, now the operation is over. All three militants have been killed. Their automatic weapons and arms have also been seized. The other formalities and investigations will now begin," said Rajesh Kumar, Inspector General of Police (Jammu Range).
"It looks like these people infiltrated this morning itself, after which they went ahead with their suicidal terror attack," Kumar added.
Giving details of the operation to the media, Kumar said: "Like I said, in the morning, three militants attacked the Hiranagar police station where four of our police jawans were martyred, and two civilians were part of the casualties. From the police station, they took a truck and got onto the National Highway. From there, they abandoned the truck and took another car and reached outside the Samba Army Cantonment. They entered from this very gate."
"There were three militants in all, as confirmed to us by the auto driver as well as the truck driver, the army persons present and other eye witness accounts. ...They fired inside the army camp, then the army began their operation. Along with the CRPF, army and police, we sealed the area outside the camp," he added.
Kumar also said he was yet to put a definite figure on the final death toll, but could confirm that at least eight people, including army, police, and civilians were killed in the incident.
