Malaysia's attorney general Mohamad Apandi Ali has said a North Korean man, held in connection with the nerve agent attack on Kim Jong-nam, will be released and deported because of lack of evidence.

Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half-brother of the North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un, was killed at the Kuala Lumpur airport with a toxic nerve agent. South Korea and U.S. had alleged he was assassinated by agents of the North Korean regime.

According to the local media, Ali said that 45-year-old Ri Jong Chol will be released on Friday.

Malaysia has not yet described his alleged role in the killing.
