Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, is leading a high level delegation to the 6th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) in Bangkok from June 22 to June 26.

An MEA release said that Snehlata Kumar, Secretary, Border Management and Disaster Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, will assist the minister.

India has played an important role in global initiatives on disaster management and is committed to achieving the goals set under the Hyogo Framework of Action through systematic and sustained efforts. India has welcomed the convening of the conference as it provides a platform to disaster managers in Asia to share their experiences in reducing disaster risk in the region.

At the conference, Minister Rijiju will highlight the steps taken by the Government of India in evacuating nearly one million people during the cyclone 'Phailin' that hit the coast of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh in October 2013.

He will also focus on the innovative use of high technology, including satellite imagery and precise weather forecasting tools, which allowed the authorities to be better prepared to face the biggest storm to have hit the Indian coast in more than a decade, thereby preventing huge loss of life and property, including livestock.

The Government of India is committed to reducing disaster risk in a planned manner. The Indian delegation will share the various measures being taken by the Central and State Governments in India in reducing risks of natural disasters.

The National Institute of Disaster Management of India is hosting a special side event on Policy Dialogue with the theme: 'Integration of Sustainability Issues with Disaster Management - Recent Advances on Tools and Practices'on June 23 at the Bangkok Convention Center at Hotel Centara Grand.

Sneh Lata Kumar and Ambassador Harsh Vardhan Shringla will speak at the event. The dialogue is expected to recommend approaches in mainstreaming sustainability and a roadmap for its implementation at different levels of policy, planning and implementation.
