Lotus has roped in Heikki Kovalainen as replacement for fellow Finn Kimi Raikkonen for the final two races of the season after seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher turned down the opportunity.
According to the BBC, Raikkonen pulled out of this weekend's United States Grand Prix and the finale in Brazil to undergo back surgery to cure a long-standing problem.
Kovalainen, 32, has a record of one win and three podiums in 109 starts, the report said.
He said that it was a fantastic opportunity for him to join Lotus, adding that he had seen the car win races and finish on the podium this year, and that he would be pushing hard for the best results possible.
He also acknowledged that joining the team so late in the season would be a challenge but said that hew knew the team at Enstone well.
Lotus is battling with Mercedes and Ferrari for second place in the constructors' championship, the report said.
