The Sri Lanka Navy revealed that it has arrested seven local fishermen for allegedly engaging in illegal fishing practices.
Naval personnel attached to SLN Dockyard arrested six local fishermen, with 3 Fiber Glass Dinghies, engaged in illegal fishing in the seas off Koneshwaram, Trincomalee on Wednesday.
During the arrest, the Navy personnel also seized three pairs of diving fins, fifteen oxygen cylinders and 63 saltwater fish belonging to various species from the fishermen's possession, reports Lanka Page.
The arrested fishermen and the fishing equipment were produced before the Harbour Police Station Trincomalee for further investigation.
Sri Lankan Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the island's Navy and the Coast Guard to take tough action against the fishermen, who are using illegal fishing practices.
