Describing Sunday night's massacre which claimed lives of 58 people and injured 515 others at a Las Vegas musical concert as an 'act of pure evil', President Donald Trump said this was a time for all Americans to stay united.

"My fellow Americans we are joined together today in sadness, shock and grief. It was an act of pure evil," President Trump said.

Addressing the nation hours after the terrible tragedy, President Trump said he would be visiting Las Vegas on Wednesday to offer his condolences to the families of those killed, commiserate with the injured and admitted to hospital, and meet and congratulate city law enforcement officers and first responders who acted quickly to contain the damage.

Trump also took the occasion to express gratitude to the first responders and said that speed of the police reaction was "miraculous."

Trump also prayed for the nation's unity and peace.

"We pray for the entire nation to find unity and peace. And we pray for the day when evil is vanished and the innocent are safe from hatred and from fear," he said.
