A report has revealed that Hassan Abboud, the leader of the Syrian Islamist militant group Ahrar al-Sham has been killed in a bomb blast at a meeting along with other top commanders.
The blast took place when a suicide bomber detonated a bomb-laden vest in the north-western town of Ram Hamdan, reported the BBC.
Activist groups say at least the attack may have claimed at least 40 lives, although the exact death toll is not known so far.
Ahrar al-Sham is part of the Islamic Front, a coalition that comprises seven Islamist rebel groups. The group has blamed the Islamic State in the past for an attack that killed several of its members.
