Leonardo DiCaprio participated in the Our Ocean Conference in Washington DC recently and spoke up on the depreciating condition about Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

The 39-year-old Oscar nominated star said that he has witnessed environmental damage firsthand, as when he dove in the reef 20 years ago, it was paradise as compared to when he went underwater a couple of years back, where all he could see was "bleached coral reefs and massive dead zones", News.com.au reported.

The conference even had a video message from President Barack Obama where his plans to create the world's biggest marine sanctuary was revealed.

DiCaprio added that the President's speech for expanding marine reserves in US waters and ban illegal fishing at the beginning of the meeting, which was also attended by US Secretary of State John Kerry, was the perfect start.

The actor had also declared a donation of 3 million dollars to help the preservation of marine life in 2013.
