Amidst the issue of ban being imposed on E-rickshaws, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal met Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, where the latter assured to look into the matter.
"The Supreme Court asked to form a policy on the rickshaws, but a notification was passed on April 24 over imposing a ban on them due to their illegality. Later, the government started challenging the rickshaw owners for 4800 rupees," said Kejriwal.
"The LG heard us very nicely. He said he will look into the matter. I hope that impounding won't happen. I want Nitin Gadkari to withdraw April 24 notification. Everyone should support them. If there is any consensus, then the impounding should stop," he added.
Earlier today, E rickshaw owners took to streets in New Delhi protesting against the ban.
Nawal Chaudhary, an E rickshaw owner, said, "It's our bread and butter, we have spent one lakh rupees on the rickshaw, we want the government to lift the ban."
Another owner, Rakesh Garg, said, "They have banned E rickshaws without any reason. When they were imported, no policy was made. There is Supreme Court judgment that the administration is referring to. It asks for a policy formation and not banning the rickshaws. More than 1000 rickshaws have been impounded. We want all the impounded rickshaws to be returned."
On April 24, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) issued a notification, in which the ministry amended certain rules in the Motor Vehicles' Act.
