~Amritsar, Jan. 13 (ANI): This year, the age old festival of Lohri is being celebrated with pomp and show at various schools and colleges in the city, stressing the need to educate girls to make them self-reliant.
Girl students clad in colourful traditional attires participated in singing and dancing and organised a kite-flying competition.
"Earlier this festival was celebrated for boys. But now, as there is no difference between a boy child and a girl, so we all have come to our school to celebrate Lohri," said a student to ANI.
To abolish malpractices of female foeticide, several institutions dedicated the festival to the girl child.
"We want to request the parents to let a girl child take birth and excel in their life. There should not be female infanticide and child marriage. They should be given a chance to study and lead good life," another student said.
