Speaker Sumitra Mahajan had to adjourn proceedings in the Lok Sabha till noon on Thursday after an unrelenting opposition repeatedly demanded a discussion and a response from the government on the suicide committed by a Rajasthan-based farmer in the national capital on Wednesday. The opposition also insisted on the government taking back the Land Acquisition Bill and having a rethink on it.
An irritated Mahajan charged the opposition with showing a lack of humanity and playing politics over the death of the farmer Gajendra Singh, who hailed from a village in Rajasthan's Dausa District.
Earlier, both Houses of Parliament witnessed uproarious scenes over the tragic suicide that took place during the AAP rally at the Jantar Mantar here yesterday.
The opposition continuously demanded a thorough debate over the farmer's suicide while pressing the Narendra Modi government to withdraw the controversial land acquisition ordinance, which they see as "anti-farmer and anti-poor."
"I too am pained by yesterday's incident," said Mahajan.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu said, "The government has no problem in discussing an important issue like this. This is a very serious issue."
