The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the controversial Land Acquisition Bill of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP Government at the Centre via a voice vote.
Nine amendments to the bill have been adopted.
"The nine amendments that were put in place are proof enough that it is a pro-farmer bill," Union Minister for Rural Development Chaudhary Birender Singh told the media.
"Let them [opposition] do what they want to. The land bill takes into full consideration the interest of farmers," Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh added.
Meanwhile, the Congress said that the party would continue to fight against the bill in the Upper House.
"The bill is a death knell to the farmers and particularly to rural India as much as it is to the whole of India. We strongly oppose the provisions in this bill and we will continue to oppose this in the Rajya Sabha," Congress leader Kamal Nath said.
Further details are awaited.
