Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely on Monday lashed out at the BJP-led government at the Centre for not handling the issue of government formation in the state properly, and blamed them for creating a mockery of democracy.

"It is very unfortunate, and it's a mockery of democracy. The way the election process in Delhi is being handled is really shameful," said Lovely.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party like its poll promises is changing the stand on everyday basis. The Congress had earlier also demanded that there should be fresh elections in Delhi but by-elections were declared, but when the Congress started preparing for it and only two days for last date of nomination were left, the Central Government and the BJP has again changed its stand because they were afraid of losing the elections, there were chances of them getting exposed, now again they have back tracked," he added.

The Congress leader also questioned the government for changing its stand on the issue.

"When they wanted the elections in Delhi then why before the by-elections the stand of the Central Government, the Home Ministry and the Lieutenant Governor was different," Lovely said.

The Congress leader reiterated his party's stand on conducting fresh polls in Delhi.

"The people of Delhi have all the right to choose the government of their choice. The Congress party's stand remains the same, we have nothing to do with the BJP, neither are we going to support anybody. Both these parties are afraid of facing the people of Delhi because they have made so many tall and false promises. We are confident that in these elections the people of Delhi will teach a lesson to both these parties," he added while taking a jibe at the BJP and AAP.

Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung is today scheduled to hold an all party meeting later in the day to discuss the issue of government formation in Delhi.

Delhi has been under President's Rule since February after Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government stepped down after remaining in power for 49 days.

The BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal combine has 29 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly. The alliance had won 32 seats in the Delhi Assembly polls held last year, but three BJP MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha in the general elections. The AAP had won 28 seats in the polls.
