Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag, assumed charge on Wednesday at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi and paid homage to the Unknown Soldier at India Gate.
Lt. Gen.Suhag took over from Lt. Gen. S.K. Singh, who retired as the Vice Chief of Army Staff on December 31.
Lt. Gen. Suhag is to take over as the next chief of the army staff after General Bikram Singh retires on July 31, 2014.
Lt. Gen. Suhag possesses tremendous operational experience, which includes tenure as a Company Commander during "Op Pawan" in Sri Lanka. He raised and commanded 33 RR (58 GR) in Nagaland from October 1994 to June 1997.
He commanded the 53 Infantry Brigade which was committed in counter insurgency operations in the Kashmir valley from July 2003 to March 2005.
Lt. Gen. Suhag took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Eastern Command on June 16, 2012.
Prior to this, he was the GOC 3 Corps looking after the dual responsibility of CI Ops in the North Eastern States, as well as conventional operational tasks along the Indo-China border from March 2011 to June 2012.
