The Madras High Court on Saturday stayed the two-day police custody of Tamil folk artiste Kovan for criticising the AIADMK government on the liquor issue.

Kovan was placed in police custody for two days on Friday.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday had sought a reply from the Tamil Nadu Government on a petition filed by Kovan's son, alleging that police were trying to book his father under the National Security Act.

Kovan was arrested at his residence by the cyber crime department of the Tamil Nadu on October 31 after his video went viral on social media. He was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 124 (A) which covers acts of sedition.

In his controversial song, Kovan allegedly trashed Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for enjoying herself while the state was reeling under the influence of alcohol.

His song 'Oorkku oorkku sarayam' mocks liquor shops run by the government in Tamil Nadu.

The singer also commented on the chief minister's luxurious lifestyle, while lamenting the common man's struggle to make ends meet.
