Amid political stalemate in Maharashtra, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Saturday asked caretaker Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis to "indicate the willingness and ability of his party to form the government in Maharashtra".
The move comes amid differences between allies BJP and Shiv Sena over power-sharing.
No party has staked claim to form government even a fortnight after the results were declared.
Sources said the Governor has decided to explore the possibility of formation of government.
The term of assembly ends on Saturday. The BJP remerged as the single-largest party in the assembly polls winning 105 seats while Shiv Sena won 56 seats. The Shiv Sena has been insisting on having a chief minister for two-and-a-half years in power sharing with the BJP.
