Union Tourism and Culture Minister Dr. Mahesh Sharma on Wednesday wielded a broom to participate in the 'Swacch Bharat Abhiyan', which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2.

Sharma is the latest minister to join the Cleanliness mission, after a host of celebrities and Ministers were spotted wielding the broom.

"Prime Minister has started this movement of cleanliness in a big way. Cleanliness is one area in which India is lagging behind. Even Mahatma Gandhi had envisioned a clean India, this is the beginning of a movement," Sharma said.

Former cricketer Maninder Singh also participated in the event by wielding the broom to clean a street.

The 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' was launched nationwide to focus on sanitation, hygiene and waste management.

It encourages people to sweep, remove garbage, debris and unauthorized encroachments from roads, markets and residential places.

The 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' aims at making India a clean country by 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
