Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India campaign would only benefit crony capitalists and two or three 'friendly industrialists'.
"Can't the farmer contribute to 'Make in India' or is it only the two or three 'friendly industrialists' who can contribute to 'Make in India'? 'Make in India' is only for crony capitalists," said Gandhi.
"Make in India' should be for everyone .Can't the small business contribute to 'Make in India'? Yesterday on train there was a small businessman and he was asking me what this 'Make in India' is? What is my role in this?" he asked.
Meanwhile, Union food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said that Rahul Gandhi was just creating a drama and is not actually concerned about farmer issues.
"When Rahul Gandhi's party was in power, how many times did he travel by train? Then he could have gone and actually have a look at the kinds of problems people were facing in trains. He travels in first class when he goes for a vacation and takes the third class in train for two hours after coming back. All this is just a drama and the people of the country are aware of that," Kaur said.
"The number of scams that took place in the UPA regime is in front of the people. He had vanished for a whole two months when the country was going through so much, when farmers were facing so much trouble due to incessant rains; he was nicely enjoying his holidays," she added.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' campaign saying that farmers contribute the maximum to this initiative and added that the government should help the farming community.
"The Prime Minister talks about 'Make in India'. Who contributes more than the farmers from Punjab in 'Make in India'? The poor contributes to 'Make in India', isn't that ' Make in India'? The Central Government should help out the farmers," Gandhi told the media.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Congress vice-president left for Punjab by train to assess the plight of the farmers.
After meeting the farmers of Mandi Gobindgarh in Punjab, Gandhi said that the Land Acquisition Bill is meant to snatch the land away from the farmers to benefit the industrialists.
