The Maldives has joined a regional search for missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 debris following reports of unidentified wreckage spotted by islanders.

According to News.com.au, Maldivian police have reported several sightings of wreckage washed up along the northern atolls of the archipelago.

Some of the wreckage occurred about a month ago but was only brought to the attention of authorities quite recently.

An object similar to the two-metre long "flaperon" wing fragment was found on the beaches at the honeymoon resort Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, according to reports.

The object was reportedly found in May and is being currently analysed.
