A passenger was apprehended on Friday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad, south of Hyderabad, for illegally possessing foreign currency of various denominations worth over Rs 39 lakhs.

The accused was bound to Dubai by flight FZ-436 when the Hyderabad unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence intercepted him. The hand baggage was allegedly packed with Dinar, Riyal and Dinar denominations.

Upon further questioning, he revealed that the currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers to sale them in Dubai at huge profits.

The accused apparently had illegally carried foreign currency worth Rs 9 lakh on his last visit in May.
