Manipur Governor passes away in Mumbai

Manipur Governor Dr. Syed Ahmed passed away at the Lilavati Hospital here on Sunday. He was 73

Ahmed was suffering from cancer and was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital, which is located in suburban Bandra last week, sources said.

Ahmed is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters.

Ahmed was sworn in as the Governor of Manipur on May 16, 2015. A former Congress leader from Maharashtra, Ahmed was shifted to Manipur from Jharkhand, where he had been the governor from August 26, 2011.

Besides being in politics, Ahmed possessed a flair for writing, especially in Urdu. He was a double master's degree holder, in Hindi and English, and also had a doctorate in Urdu.

He had written an autobiography titled 'Pagdandi se Shahar Tak'. 'Maktal se Manzil', 'Kafas se Chaman' and 'Jange-Azaadi Me Urdu Shayari' were his other written works.

A member of the Congress Party since 1977, Ahmed was elected to the Maharashtra State Assembly five times from the Nagpada constituency in Mumbai. He also served as a Minister in the Maharashtra Government, where he held portfolios like Housing.
