The Government of Manipur is taking every step possible to highlight the potential of horticulture in the state.
At the recently held annual Orange Festival in the state's Tamenlong District, the morale of orange growers in the region was given a boost with Chief Minister Ibobi Singh handing out awards to orange cultivators.
This year, over 300 orange cultivators participated and displayed a variety of orange crops.
Kamethon Kamei, a Project Officer with the DRDA, said, "It is to promote orange grower and to plant systemically and scientific method of plantation for orange grower."
The annual event also helps to promote tourism in the state. Folk dance troupes from different parts of the state also enthralled the visitors. Many artists performed Pung Chalom and Thang-ta. Handicrafts stalls were also put up to promote local artisans. anthol, a local resident, said, "Growing orange is very difficult because we have to take care of the plant till it bears fruit but when it started bearing fruits then we get income. We earn handsome money and mange the family expenses. Orange cultivation is profitable."
Hoil Wangle, another local resident, said, "This season, I have earned around Rs. 50,000 to 60,000."

As part of the event, 22 girls walked the ramp for Orange Queen Beauty Pageant title. After a tough competition, Kapagonglui of Tamenglong bagged the crown. Ajuwana Kamei of Tamenglong was named as the first runners up, while Merinda TK from Pallel was declared the second runners up.
Kapagonglui said, "I feel so surprised to win this title. I am so happy and I thank God .Without him I couldn't have won."
Such festivals not only promote progressive farming but promote tourism in the state.
