Maoists on Sunday released an engineer who was abducted on Thursday from the outskirts of the city.

Pankaj Kumar, an engineer with Siddhartha Construction Company, was supervising construction of a bridge, which comes under the ambit of Ranchi police administration.

The Ranchi police had been continuously making efforts to bring Kumar back from the Maoists' custody safely.

"On the night of February 13, a site engineer of Siddhartha Construction Company was abducted by Maoists. We got the information on February 14 at around 1pm (IST) after that we started investigating the matter. Our main priority was to bring back the abducted engineer from Maoists custody safely," said Surendra Jha, Superintendent of Police of Ranchi.

The Maoists often abduct officials and demand extortion money. Their acts have hampered many development projects in Jharkhand.

The Maoists, also known as naxals, have killed police and politicians, and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since the 1960s.

The rebels are estimated to number 7000 hardcore fighters in nearly a third of India's 630 districts.
