Chief Australian selector John Inverarity has confirmed that Shaun Marsh is a contender to play in the Ashes, and this was followed by his selection for Australia A to face England next week.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Marsh, 30, said he was buoyed by the positive news from selectors but acknowledged he had to justify their faith with good batting form, starting against the Bushrangers.

The cricketer said that he really enjoyed red-ball cricket but it was an area that he needed to improve in, adding that his one-day cricket had been good over the past two or three months.

Marsh also said that he shared fans' and pundits' frustration at his uneven performances, the report mentioned.

He further said that his early Test experiences in Sri Lanka and South Africa had allowed him to retain confidence amid his significant form and fitness problems since then, according to the report.
